Knights of Columbus

On March 29, 1882, the Connecticut state legislature officially chartered the Knights of Columbus, a fraternal benefit society founded by Father Michael J. McGivney with a group of parishioners in the basement of St. Mary’s Church in New Haven, Connecticut. Still true to its founding principles of charity, unity, and fraternity 125 years later, the Knights of Columbus has grown to the largest lay Catholic organization in the world with more than 1.7 million members.

The history of the Order shows how the foresight of Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney, whose cause for sainthood is being investigated by the Holy See, brought about what has become the world’s foremost Catholic fraternal benefit society. The Order has helped families obtain economic security and stability through its life insurance, annuity and long-term care programs, and has contributed time and energy worldwide to service in communities. Throughout its history, the Knights of Columbus has been an effective advocate and defender of civil and religious rights for all. The organization has also contributed billions of dollars and millions of hours of volunteer service to charity, including the gift of two-thirds of all charitable donations in the United States each year.

The Knights of Columbus has grown from several members in one council to more than 13,000 councils and 1.7 million members throughout the United States, Canada, the Philippines, Mexico, Poland, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Panama, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, Guatemala, Guam and Saipan.

During the Fall 2007 semester at UL, several students became interested in starting a Knights of Columbus council at Our Lady of Wisdom Church & Catholic Student Center. Led by Knight Derek Vallee, organizational meetings took place among the interested students and with various area Knights. We are happy to say that a new council is well underway. Our Lady, Seat of Wisdom Council will primarily consist of students of UL, while other members of Our Lady of Wisdom Church will also be involved. This historic founding of a new Council of the Knights of Columbus at Our Lady of Wisdom will surely bear great fruit for years to come.
