Named for Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman and long recognized as an organization representative of Catholic students on secular university campuses, the Newman Club was established at what was then known as Southwestern Louisiana Institute in 1923.  Eighty-eight years later, the Newman Club Chapter of the Alumni Association at University of Louisiana, Lafayette was formed!  Alumni Chapters at UL are alumni organizations whose membership base is derived from a specific college, major, or interest group (e.g. the Newman Club). Each Alumni Chapter at UL is involved in many activities, but its major goals are:

  • To provide an opportunity for all alumni (graduates or former students) and friends of UL involved in the chapter’s particular area of interest to interact meaningfully with the University and its activities and to serve as the contact for current information about the University and its programs in that chapter’s particular area of interest.
  • To consistently seek to increase active chapter membership.
  • To recruit, under the guidance and direction of university admissions staff, outstanding students to attend UL.
  • To provide support to the University, to the Alumni Association, to students from their area of interest for the purpose of attending UL, and to the college or department of affiliation.

Who can join?

Anyone who has completed one semester at the University of Louisiana, Lafayette qualifies as an alumnus of the university.  Involvement in the Newman club during your time at UL (USL or SLI) is not a requirement for membership!  Current students of the University can also join the alumni chapter as associate members.  Not a student or alumni?  Not a problem!  You can join the chapter as an ABC—Alumni By Choice!
